The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) was founded in 1988 with Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia as its charter members. Now, it is well-known for its Powerball specially designed for big jackpots. The jackpots currently start at $40 million. Like USA Hot lotto, it is drawn every Wednesday and Saturday.
It is very famous with its unofficial mascot, ‘BALL’, a large, life-sized symbol of the red Powerball. It is said that the perimeter size is 132 inches. It was firstly launched in television commercials in 2006 and won the best show Award from the Northwest Addy Awards. Its most illustrious advertisement campaign portrayed a super big BALL which could not fit through revolving doors, into elevators, even up escalators. Nowadays, BALL is also promoted at special events and community venues such as collegiate and other professional sporting events.
It was firstly launched using two drums to offer greater manipulation, allow higher jackpot odds, various prize levels, and low overall odds of winning. This two-drum concept founded by Steve Caputo has also been adapted by Mega Millions in the US, Thunderball in the UK, Australia’s Powerball, and Euro Millions.
Hosted by Mike Pace, an experienced radio broadcaster, the Powerball lotteries were usually drawn at Screenscape Studios in West Des Moines, Iowa. Then, Powerball went on tour for the very first time in 1996 and had 5 drawings at the Summer Olympics, Atlanta.
Next, Powerball made its debut sales in Florida on January 4, 2009 and its first draw on January 7. With more participants, the jackpot probability declined from 1:146 million to 1:195 million in which the overall probability became 1:35.
The statistics has noted that the average jackpot winning has risen from $95 million to $141 million. It has been expected that more than 3.5 million additional prizes could be given. Hence, the initial jackpot enhanced to $20 million with an extra prize up to $5 million. It means that the jackpot has contributed 30.3% to 32.5% from its total sales. Florida’s membership in Powerball initiated a move of the live drawings from West Des Moines, Iowa, to Universal Studios in Orlando. There are now three hosts announcing the winners in turns, Tracy Wiu, Elizabeth Hart, and Scott Adams.
