The State agency reported that last year, more than 3500 lottery winners had received public support or they people on food stamps, welfare or other help. It’s astonishing that the lottery winners are still receiving aid. The counting started from a state law passed in 2012 that demanded the state to match a list of the lottery winners who won $1,000 or more.

The Two Cases Led To Document Signing

Rick Snyder immediately signed the document after the legislators faced two cases in which the public used food stamps even after bagging lump sum prizes of $700,000 and $850,000. The law introduced a requirement for the ‘asset-based means’ which tests to help decide the eligibility for receiving public assistance.

Lottery Winners Receiving Public Aid

According to the ‘State Department of Human Services’ more than 2,000 lottery winners are receiving public aid because certain benefits are not included by the tests or due to some other reasons. Due to the law, 565 cases were closed and this is what the reports have shown. It also stated an instance where a man who won $33,000 in a lottery still gets $1,000 every month as child care help for all of his three children.

The Matching

The match system is actually beneficial because the considerable winnings can be identified but there are loopholes that allow the lottery winners to collect benefits that need to be stopped. This can only be done by amending federal and state law policy. This is what DHS Director Maura Corrigan stated.

Winners Bagged Huge Amount

According to the state, nearly 14% of the lottery winners are either recipients of welfare or dwell in a household that has recipients. 3,544 winners took home a sum of about $6,800 which prompted the advocates for the poor to ask the extent of the issue.

Judy Putnam told that she agrees that big lottery winners should not get benefits that meet the basic need. But having made this statement, the cases that drive this, the cases are extremely rare.

Amendment in Law to Come Soon

The DHS officials declared that they will find an amendment in the laws and polices so that the lottery winners do not get public assistance. Corrigan said that a person who recently bags $125,000 as lottery prize but his children living with him are entitled to get $400 each month in food stamps if only they prepare their food independently.

What Putnam Feels About The Law?

According to Putnam some genuinely needy people have been affected by the state’s decision towards means testing asset instead of checking the income to decide the eligibility for getting public assistance. The unemployed workers are using their savings to make house payments while getting food stamps to enjoy a chance of getting established.

The Real Needy Ones Are In Danger

This law has really hurt the people who have legitimate requirements. There are many who are taking undue advantage of the public assistance system but the needy ones are suffering.
