Like most of other lottery games in the world, in Hong Kong Mark Six, players must select six numbers from 49 numbers available. They guess the numbers from the transparent lottery machine which contains small and colored balls and is rotated to provide the winning numbers in each drawing. It means that players select six numbers out of 49 numbers (they are called drawn numbers) and, during the drawing, 1 more number is selected from the transparent machine (this is called as extra number).
In every selection of the numbers, players must pay 10 HKD for one selection result of the draw. The drawing is taken place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 9:30 pm (Hong Kong Time). All bets will be closed 15 minutes before the drawing time. Players win the jackpot if they can match their six numbers with the numbers drawn from the lottery machine. Then the extra number is used to get winners for the other prizes (there are six other categories of the prize).
Anyhow, if there are no winners in one drawing, the money for the prize will be accumulated for the jackpot in the next game drawing until someone wins the main jackpot. The biggest jackpot was won in May 2011 and was shared for three winners. The amount of the jackpot was HK$ 133.5 millions or as much as $ 17.2millions.
Mark Six lottery was established in 1975 by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (formed in 1884). The Jockey Club itself has a tradition to donate some amount of money for charity. It is also the biggest tax payer in Hong Kong. In Mark Six lottery game the money is distributed for some purposes as follow:
- -25% (called Lottery duty) and is paid to the government
- -15% (called Lottery fund) and is used for social and welfare projects
- -6% is to fund the operational cost at HKJC
- -54% (the Prize Fund) and is used to be the game prize
People in Hong Kong love to play this game because this game is so popular among them. Basically, this game is only played in Hong Kong, but people can also find this game played illegally in other countries, especially in Mainland China. To make the drawing fair, some outsiders are invited by the HKJC to observe and supervise the drawing process. They are usually people from high social status community.
