Winning the lottery is supposed to be the hard part. Figuring out what to do with the money? That’s the fun part—unless you’re William Wheeler.

Wheeler, from Newton, North Carolina, scratched his way into a $100,000 prize—the biggest win of his life—and immediately decided not to deal with the “what now?” part. His plan: hand the money to his wife and let her call the shots.

“I’ll just give the money to my wife and let her figure out what to do with it. Whatever she decides is fine with me.”

The ticket came from Fast Phil’s on Turnersburg Highway in Statesville: a $50 $8 Million Money Maker scratch-off. The game offers a top prize of $8 million, with second-tier prizes of $100,000. Wheeler hit one of those six-figure wins.

He claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Sept. 16 and took home $71,764 after federal and state taxes. “I am very, very lucky,” he said. His wife was even more excited—and he thinks their three daughters will likely see some of the winnings, too.

As of his claim, the game still has money on the table: six out of ten second-tier $100,000 prizes remaining, three out of five top prizes of $8 million, and 23 out of 40 third-tier $25,000 prizes. The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 4.14.

Takeaway: Sometimes winning isn’t about what you buy—it’s about how you handle the win. Wheeler chose peace of mind by letting his wife decide what comes next.
