So, picture this. You just won $2 million. Do you scream? Do you quit your job in dramatic fashion? Or do you calmly walk into the lottery office dressed like cash itself?
That’s exactly what one Washington, D.C. woman did.
After snagging the top $2 million prize in the DC Lottery’s new “Extreme 500X Fortune” game — the city’s first $50 scratch-off — she showed up to claim her check wearing what can only be described as “money couture.” Think a feather boa made of dollar bills, golden hat, and big shiny dollar-sign glasses that said I’m rich, but you’ll never know who I am.
The ticket came from Franklin Liquor & Market on 7th Street Northeast — and with that single purchase, she became the first $2 million winner in the game’s history.
Before her lucky moment, she’d spent 30 years as a civil servant. She’d even started looking into retirement options. Then, fate (and a $50 gamble) decided to speed things up.
Now, she says she’s “adventure ready.” Translation: retirement planning just turned into life planning.
When lottery officials asked if this changes anything, she laughed: “This changes everything!”
She opted for a one-time payment of $1.52 million instead of the full $2 million spread over 20 years — because patience isn’t part of the money outfit.
Lottery exec Randy Burnside chimed in with the usual corporate cheer: “We love to see players win life-changing prizes like this.” Translation: someone just made the odds (1 in 227,497.50, by the way) look way too easy.
There’s still one more $2 million ticket floating around out there, along with a handful of smaller five-figure prizes.
So if you’re in D.C. and see someone in a shiny gold hat at the corner store — maybe it’s your turn. Or maybe it’s her again, buying a new adventure.
